Godawan, named after the endangered Great Indian Bustard, offers a sensory experience with a symphony of aromas including candied figs, vanilla, pepper, and dried apricots on the nose. Crafted from six-row barley in Rajasthan’s Desert National Park, the whisky stands out with its unique flavor profile, courtesy of the high protein content of the barley. A lengthy fermentation cycle lasting 55-65 hours ensures the extraction of maximum malt character.
The Great Indian Bustard, once a contender for India’s national bird, is critically endangered, with only 200 individuals remaining, primarily confined to Rajasthan. Despite its flamboyant nature, the peacock took the title of the national bird.
The region’s high temperatures in Rajasthan play a crucial role in the whisky’s production, leading to a faster maturation process and contributing to a distinct depth of flavor. The whisky matures in an environment vastly different from Scotland’s, with temperatures often reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This extreme climate results in a high angel’s share, or evaporation rate, and accelerates the maturation, providing a unique character to Godawan.
Godawan Tasting Notes
On the palate, the whisky delights with flavors of flambe’d pudding and nougat, leaving behind a light and crispy buttery mouthfeel. As a final touch, local botanicals, Rasna and Jatamansi, are incorporated using casks previously steeped in these elements, contributing a unique spice note to the Godawan whisky. The intricate interplay of these factors defines the whisky’s distinct and captivating character.
