Kurayoshi Sherry Cask Sherry Pure Malt Whiskey is a sherried expression from the Kurayoshi range, created by little-known Japanese whisky producer Matsui Shuzou (also known for sake and shochu). These whiskies are blended malts, made with whiskies distilled in Scotland and shipped over to Japan, where they’re blended with Japanese whisky.
This whisky is distinguished by sweet aromas of fruit (grapes, pear) and chocolate with a tangy flavor reminiscent of lemongrass. The overall aroma is balanced and the finish is soft and persistent.
Kurayoshi Sherry Cask Pure Malt is the second of the two Sherry-influenced Malts in the Kurayoshi portfolio. But this one is younger — aging approximately three years before finishing in Sherry casks. Best Part? It’s a 100% malted barley Whisky, sourced from distilleries around Scotland, before making their way to Japan, where it is blended with Japanese Whisky, aged and cut to proof with the legenary volcanic stone filtered waters of Tottori Prefecture. This means that the flavor profile is very similar to its older sibling, but with the brighter, more youthful zest that you would expect in this age-range. This brings out more herbal and citrus notes while maintaining a nice complexity. The real surprise is how well it pairs with food. Think of it like a “white Wine of Whisky” and enjoy.
